ACU National’s Lenten Lecture was introduced in 1999 and is the University’s major public oration. It addresses the theme of theology in dialogue with Australian culture, while also contributing to the relationship between theology and other disciplines offered at the University, the Catholic Church and society.

2004 Lenten Lecture

Father Mark Raper, SJ

Father Mark Raper SJ, Provincial of the Australian Jesuits and previous International Director of the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS), presented the 2004 Lenten Lecture, Building Peace, Bringing Hope, at North Sydney Campus (MacKillop) on 25 February 2004.

“At a time in our history when the entire world is increasingly dominated by fear and insecurity, when currently there are as many as 24 wars being waged across the globe is there any hope for peace,” questions Father Mark Raper. “Each of us is invited to follow our desires rather than surrender to our fears,” he said.
