Course: Postgraduate Certificate in TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language) 

Course description
This 120 hour course is for teachers or other suitably qualified people interested in teaching English as a Second Language to adults or to school students.

Course content overview:
* The Nature Of Language
* Major language systems, functional grammar, phonetics and phonology, first and second language acquisition theories.
* TESOL Techniques
* Communicative approach to language teaching, teaching reading, writing, listening and speaking, developing resources, designing tasks, adult learning strategies, Drama and ESOL, workplace English, English for Academic Purposes.
* Language And Culture
* Language variety, dialects, register, cross-cultural communication, bilingualism, multi-culturalism.
* TESOL Theory
* Assessment and evaluation, programming, classroom organisation, role of the ESL teacher.

Course duration
120 hours in total, comprising of: 80 hours lectures/workshops; 20 hours practicum; 20 hours observation.

Class size
25 participants.

Pre-requisites
Participants need to have a tertiary qualification, ie, a minimum of three years at a recognised institution.

Certification
A Certificate of TESOL (Postgraduate course) will be issued on completion of the course, based on attendance and assessment.

Lecturers
The lecturers are highly qualified people who have had many years experience teaching and lecturing in this field.

Methods of instruction
Lectures, videos, workshops and small group work. Practical work and between session activities. Detailed handouts given each session.

Assessment
Assessment will be progressive and participants must pass all sections. Students will be required to participate in Observation Lessons, Small Group and Individual Tuition Practice Teaching Sessions and a Demonstration Lesson.

Accreditation
This course is accredited by AMES, TAFE, ELICOS, and overseas employers. The course has also been given credit by several universities into their MEd (TESOL).
